about

Originally based on a poem by Haitian poet Oswald Durand and set to music in the late 1800’s by an American pianist, Yellow Bird has re-integrated itself into the Caribbean folk song tradition and is regularly sung within Jamaican schools. Alongside the Banana Boat Song, it is one of those songs that is so embedded in popular culture many people grow up knowing the words, often without realising how or why.

lyrics

Yellow Bird, Up high in the Banana Tree
Yellow bird, you sit all alone like me.
Did your lady friend leave the nest again?
That is very sad, makes me feel so bad.
You can fly away, in the sky away.
You're more lucky than me.

I also had a pretty girl, she's not with me today.
They're all the same those pretty girls, take tenderness, then they fly away….
Yellow Bird, Up high in the Banana Tree
Yellow bird, you sit all alone like me.

Did your lady friend leave the nest again?
That is very sad, makes me feel so bad.
You can fly away, in the sky away.
You're more lucky than me.

Wish that i were a yellow bird, i'd fly away with you.
But i am not a yellow bird, so here i sit.
Nothing i can do.
Yellow bird, yellow bird.
